Carers Programme
Community Connections identified
in 1998 and in subsequent years
that there
are
a large number of people caring for family members who
are disabled, suffering from mental health problems, have
special needs or
are
dependant older people. It was established through informal research that
many of these carers were encountering difficult and sometimes severe personal
circumstances and health problems because of the demands of their caring role
and the
lack of services development and
supports for carers.
The Carers Programme has been developed by Community Connections since that time
and has grown to include a vibrant Carers Group in North Leitrim and West Cavan
with a social activities programme, a growing partnership between the Carers’
Group, Community Connections and the North Western Health Board that has
effected real change in the way health services are delivered for this client
group. A monthly newsletter is produced in partnership between the Carers’
Group and Community Connections to keep Carers, Care Recipients and Health
Professionals informed of developments in this field of work.
Aim - To create community infrastructure to enable Carers to form their own groups, contribute to their own and each others personal development; to the development of the person they are caring for; the development of the supports and services they use and to the life of the local community.
